Pula to Venice Ferry: Operators, Prices and Day Trip Tips
Taking the ferry from Pula to Venice: operators, season, a journey time of about 3 hours, 2026 prices and tips for a day trip to the lagoon city.

Board in Pula in the morning, stroll across St Mark’s Square at lunchtime and be back in Istria by evening: the day trip to Venice on the fast ferry is one of the most special excursions from Pula. The catamarans only run in summer and dock right in the lagoon city – no traffic jams, no hunting for a parking space. Here you will find out which operators sail, what tickets cost and how best to plan the day.
Is There a Ferry from Pula to Venice?
Yes – but only seasonally and only for foot passengers. Fast catamarans, not large car ferries, run between Istria and Venice. The connection is mainly designed as a day trip: there in the morning, back in the evening.

Journey Time and How It Works
According to Adriatic Lines, the crossing takes about 3 hours. Some sailings take up to 30 minutes longer if they call at other ports on the way. The boats dock at the San Basilio terminal in the Dorsoduro district – from there you can reach the sights on foot or by vaporetto.

Tips for Your Day Trip to Venice
Before Departure
- Bring ID: Even though Croatia and Italy are both in the Schengen Area, you need a valid national ID card or passport.
- Be at the port early: Allow enough time for parking and check-in. Parking around Pula harbour is paid.
- Check the weather: In strong winds, sailings can be postponed or cancelled. You can check the forecast on our Pomer weather page.
- Seasickness: The catamarans are fast. If you are prone to it, sit in the middle and take a remedy beforehand.
In Venice
- Make a plan: With a few hours, you can take in St Mark’s Square, the Rialto Bridge and a few lanes at a relaxed pace. Any more usually means stress.
- Day-tripper access fee: On certain days, Venice charges a fee for day visitors. Before your trip, check the official City of Venice website to see whether your travel date is affected and whether ferry passengers are exempt.
- Comfortable shoes: You explore Venice on foot – over many bridges and steps.
- Be back in time: The ferry won’t wait. Allow a buffer for the walk back to the terminal.
Guided Day Trips
Some of the shipping companies offer packages with a city tour, water taxi or lunch in Venice. That can be handy for first-time visitors; if you prefer to explore on your own, just book the crossing.
Alternatives: Venice Overland
Outside the ferry season, the only option is overland. By car you drive to Venice via Slovenia and Trieste. That is very long for a day trip – expect several hours’ driving each way, plus parking fees in Venice. If you are driving to Istria anyway, though, Venice makes a good stopover on the way there or back. You will find route information in our guide to getting to Istria.
More Excursions from Pula

What You Can See in Venice in a Few Hours
From the San Basilio terminal, walk along the Zattere waterfront and through Dorsoduro towards the Accademia Bridge. From there it is only a few minutes through the lanes to St Mark’s Square with St Mark’s Basilica, the Campanile and the Doge’s Palace. For a day trip, it makes sense to be selective:
- St Mark’s Square and Basilica: the classic heart of the city. Reserve tickets for the basilica and the Doge’s Palace online if possible.
- Rialto Bridge and Rialto Market: the most famous bridge over the Grand Canal, with a bustling market in the morning.
- Lanes away from the main routes: Just two corners further on, it gets quiet. There you will find small bacari where Venetians eat cicchetti (small snacks) with a glass of wine.
- Vaporetto on the Grand Canal: A ride on the water bus shows you the palaces from the water.
With children, it is worth keeping the programme even shorter and planning a break on a campo instead.
