Pula in the Rain: The Best Ideas for a Rainy Day in Istria

Rain on your Istria holiday? Pula Aquarium, Zerostrasse, museums, the Arena, wineries and indoor tips around Pula and Medulin – with 2026 opening hours.

Updated: October 2026

Istria is a sunshine destination – but even here there are days when it rains. Especially in spring and autumn, a low-pressure system can bring grey clouds for a day or two; according to climate data, November is the wettest month. No reason to be grumpy: around Pula and Medulin there is plenty that is fun even in the rain. Here are our ideas for a rainy day in southern Istria.

1. Pula Aquarium in Fort Verudela

Pula Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Croatia and is housed in a roughly 130-year-old Austro-Hungarian fortress on the Verudela peninsula. In the tanks you will see fish and sea creatures of the Adriatic, plus tropical tanks. Children love it – and the old fortress walls are an experience in themselves.

Opening hours (as of 2026, according to aquarium.hr):

Period Opening hours Last entry
November to March 10 am–6 pm 4.30 pm
April 9 am–7 pm 5.30 pm
May 9 am–8 pm 6.30 pm
June 9 am–9 pm 7.30 pm
July and August 9 am–10 pm 8.30 pm
September 9 am–9 pm 7.30 pm
October 9 am–7 pm 5.30 pm

It is only closed on 25 December and 1 January. You will find ticket prices on the aquarium’s website. Please check before your visit.

Tip: on rainy days, lots of holidaymakers head for the aquarium. Arrive right at opening time, when it is still quiet.

2. Zerostrasse: tunnels beneath the old town

Beneath Pula’s old town runs a network of tunnels that were built as shelters during the First World War. Today you can visit part of it – dry, cool and fascinating, and not just for history buffs. The visit combines perfectly with a stroll through the old town.

3. The Arena – impressive even in the rain

The Roman amphitheatre is open to the sky, but in light rain it is often pleasantly empty. And in the underground passages where the gladiators once waited, there is an exhibition on wine and olive growing in ancient Istria. You will find opening hours and prices in our guide to the Pula Arena.

4. Museums in Pula

  • Archaeological Museum of Istria: an extensive collection from prehistory to the late Middle Ages. Check beforehand whether and which exhibitions are currently open.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art of Istria (MSU): changing exhibitions of modern art.
  • Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria: in the Kaštel on the hill above the old town – with a view when the weather clears.
  • Olei Histriae museum: a museum all about Istrian olive oil that is often recommended for rainy days.

5. Market hall and coffee houses

Pula’s market hall was built from steel and glass in 1902/1903. The fish hall is downstairs, and there are cafés upstairs. A stroll around the market in the morning is an experience even in drizzle. Afterwards, warm up in one of the cafés – such as the Cvajner gallery on the Forum, an art café in the heart of the old town.

6. Wine, olive oil and truffles

A rainy day is the perfect opportunity to indulge. In the Pula area, for example, tastings at wineries such as Benazić and at the Trapan Food & Wine Station are recommended. If you drive further inland, you can go truffle hunting in the forests near Motovun with a dog and guide. More in our guide to truffles and Motovun.

7. Caves inland

Istria has several show caves that can be visited in any weather, including Baredine Cave, Mramornica Cave and the “Kingdom of Feštini” cave. They are located inland or in the north-west of the peninsula and make a good half-day trip by car. Please check opening hours beforehand, as many caves have seasonal hours.

8. Cinema and shopping

For really rainy afternoons there are shopping centres in Pula: Max City is considered the largest shopping centre in Istria and is also home to the CineStar cinema. There is also City Mall Pula and Kino Valli.

9. Eat well

A long lunch or dinner in a konoba is just the thing on a rainy day. You will find recommendations between Pomer, Banjole, Premantura, Medulin and Pula in our food guide in the guide section.

10. Day trip to Rovinj

If the rain is only intermittent, a trip to the Venetian old town of Rovinj is worthwhile. Between showers you can wander through the lanes, stop at cafés and climb the bell tower of St Euphemia’s. Tips in our guide to a Rovinj day trip.

A rainy day with children

With children, Pula Aquarium is the classic choice – allow a good two hours there. Afterwards, a visit to the Zerostrasse tunnels fits in nicely; children usually experience them as an adventure. For the afternoon, a film at the shopping centre cinema or one of the inland show caves is a good option. And sometimes a walk in your rain jacket along the empty coast of Pomer, followed by an ice cream in Medulin, is all you need.

Tips for rainy days in Istria

  • Keep an eye on the weather app: showers often pass quickly. Half a rainy day is then enough for the aquarium or a museum, and by the afternoon the sun may already be shining again.
  • Be early: when it rains, everyone heads for the same indoor attractions. Arrive at opening time and it will be quieter.
  • Rain jacket and sturdy shoes: old-town paving and rocks get slippery when wet.
  • Head to the sea after the rain: after a thunderstorm the air is clear and the coast around Pomer looks freshly washed.
