Kayaking, SUP and Diving in Medulin: Water Sports around Pomer

Kayaking, SUP, diving and windsurfing on the Medulin Riviera: operators, best spots, times of day and tips for your water sports holiday from Pomer.

Updated: October 2026

Medulin bay is made for water sports: sheltered stretches of water, a chain of small islands, crystal-clear water and, with Cape Kamenjak, a wild rocky coastline right on your doorstep. Whether you are standing on a stand-up paddleboard for the first time, want to paddle into sea caves by kayak or are planning your first dive – around Pomer, Medulin and Premantura you will find everything you need. In this guide you will find out where the operators are based, what time of day is best and what to look out for.

Kayaking in Medulin and Premantura

Why the Medulin Riviera is ideal for kayaking

The coastline around Medulin is highly indented. Instead of long, straight beaches, there are lots of coves, headlands and small islands. That is exactly what makes kayaking here so varied: around every bend a new view opens up. The coast of Cape Kamenjak nature park on the southern tip of Istria is particularly appealing, with rocks, caves and turquoise coves waiting for you.

Kayak and SUP tour operators

The official Medulin Riviera tourism website lists several kayak and SUP operators, all based in Premantura:

  • Jistra Adventures – offers kayak and SUP tours as well as boat tours through the Medulin archipelago
  • Windsurf centar Premantura – kayak and SUP board hire
  • Windsurf Station Premantura – also kayak and SUP hire

You will also find guided kayak tours with a snorkelling stop on the usual booking platforms, for example to the sea caves on the wild coast. Prices and departure times vary by season – as of 2026, please check locally or with the operator.

Guided or on your own?

If you do not know the area yet, we recommend a guided tour to start with. The guides know where the wind is currently weaker, which coves are good for a break and how to paddle safely into caves. Experienced paddlers can hire a kayak or board and explore the sheltered parts of the bay on their own.

SUP: stand-up paddleboarding in the bay

Stand-up paddleboarding is ideal for calm mornings. Thanks to its location, the bay between Pomer and Premantura is relatively sheltered, and the water is often mirror-smooth – perfect for beginners. According to guidebooks, you can also hire kayaks, canoes and pedalos at Pomer beach. In the Pomer and Premantura area there is also a wakeboard park on the far side of the Šetnica na moru footbridge.

Tips for SUP beginners

  • Start early: in the morning the wind is usually lighter and the water calmer.
  • Avoid offshore wind: when the wind blows from the land out to sea, the way back gets hard work. Ask the rental company about the weather conditions.
  • Life jacket and leash: both are essential, especially with hired boards.
  • Sun protection: on the water you burn faster than you think. A rash vest and cap help.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing in Pomer and Premantura

Pomer has made a name for itself as a surf spot. According to kroati.de, there is a windsurfing centre at the campsite with equipment hire and lessons, and kitesurfing and wakeboarding are also on offer in the area. Premantura has two stations as well: the Windsurf centar and the Windsurf Station. The sheltered bay is suitable for beginners’ courses, while advanced surfers get their money’s worth when the wind picks up.

Diving in Medulin

Local diving schools

The underwater world around Cape Kamenjak and the Medulin archipelago is one of the most exciting diving areas in Istria. A well-known name is Diving Center Shark in Medulin, which offers boat dives. On booking platforms you will find dives and courses in Medulin from around 50 euros (as of 2026, please check with the operator).

What awaits you underwater

Diving Center Shark describes, among other sites, a reef dive site near Kamenjak with caves at depths of 6 to 27 metres, and a channel with the wreck of a fishing boat. There are taster dives for beginners, while experienced divers can head for more challenging sites. For a diving day, set aside the whole morning and leave enough time between your dive and your flight home – that applies to all divers.

Snorkelling as an alternative

If you do not want to dive straight away: the rocky coves of Cape Kamenjak and the beaches around Pomer are great for snorkelling. Pack a mask, snorkel and water shoes – the coast is mostly stony.

More water experiences

  • Mini Sub Medulin: for families, there are trips in Medulin on a small underwater boat that lets you look beneath the surface while staying dry.
  • Boat trips to the islands: many excursion boats leave from Medulin harbour heading for Cape Kamenjak, Levan island or sea caves. More in our guide to boat trips from Medulin and dolphins.
  • A beach day to cool off: after all that activity, a quiet afternoon at the beach does you good – you will find ideas in our guide to the beaches in Pomer and Medulin.

Practical tips for your water sports day

Best time of year

The water sports season runs mainly from May to October. In June and September the water is already or still pleasantly warm, and it is less busy than in high summer. Many rental stations and tour operators are closed or have reduced hours outside the season.

What to bring

  • Water shoes (rocky entry points, sea urchins)
  • A waterproof bag for your phone and keys
  • Drinking water and a small snack
  • Sun cream, cap, sunglasses with a strap
  • Light clothes to slip on for the way home

Safety

Check the weather forecast before every tour, especially the wind. In Croatia the wind can change quickly. On independent outings, stay close to the shore, tell someone your route and watch out for boat traffic, especially outside the harbours of Medulin and Pomer.
